City Park
City Park is Denver’s largest urban park, with more than 300 acres of lawns, lakes and shade trees on the city’s east side. It’s home to the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and the view from the museum steps across Ferril Lake to the downtown skyline and the snowcapped Front Range is one of the best in the city.
City Park in Denver, CO
Denver bought the land in 1882, when it was still a treeless plain beyond the edge of town. Civil engineers Henry Meryweather and Walter Graves laid out the first design in the spirit of New York’s Central Park, with looping carriage roads, walking paths and long views, and schoolchildren planted shade trees every Arbor Day. In 1896–97 the city’s first landscape architect, Reinhard Schuetze, added the big lake now named for poet Thomas Hornsby Ferril, and later designed the Esplanade, the grand entrance that runs south to Colfax Avenue and the Sullivan Memorial Gateway. The Denver Zoo began here in 1896 with an eagle and a bear, and the museum that became the Denver Museum of Nature & Science opened on the park’s eastern rise in 1908. The City Park Pavilion on the shore of Ferril Lake dates to 1929 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
A visit can be as simple as a lap around Ferril Lake on the 0.9-mile loop, a picnic under the elms or a game of tennis. Look for the Thatcher Memorial Fountain and its 18-foot bronze figure representing Colorado, and the statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns. In warm months, Denver Parks & Recreation’s Adventure Hub rents pedal boats, kayaks, paddleboards and surrey bikes near the Pavilion, anglers cast for fish in the lake and the park fills up for the Colfax Marathon, festivals and the free City Park Jazz concerts on summer Sunday evenings. Pair your stroll with a morning at the zoo or the museum, then walk to the museum’s west side for that classic sunset view of the mountains.
