Clyfford Still Museum
The Clyfford Still Museum is one of Denver’s most unusual art experiences: a museum devoted entirely to one artist, the Abstract Expressionist pioneer Clyfford Still, holding about 93 percent of everything he ever made in a quietly dramatic concrete building in the Golden Triangle.

Clyfford Still (1904-1980) helped invent Abstract Expressionism with huge canvases of jagged color, but late in his career he pulled away from the art world and kept most of his work private. His will left his collection to an American city willing to build a museum dedicated only to his art, with no other artists’ work shown. In 2004, his widow Patricia Still chose Denver, and the museum opened on November 18, 2011. The collection now counts about 3,125 works, roughly 825 paintings and 2,300 works on paper, plus Still’s personal archives.
The 28,500-square-foot building, designed by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works, uses textured cast-in-place concrete and filtered natural light that changes through the day across nine second-floor galleries. Still never gave his paintings poetic titles, so you will see names like PH-929, which makes the visit feel like a conversation with the work itself. The museum sits next door to the Denver Art Museum, so it is easy to visit both in one day.
Insider tip: Admission is free for visitors 17 and under, and the museum holds Pay-What-You-Wish nights and SCFD Free Days through the year. Check the calendar before you go, and leave time for the archive displays.
