Purgatory Resort
Purgatory Resort is Durango’s home mountain in the San Juans—more than 1,600 skiable acres of steep tree skiing, wide-open cruisers and terrain parks, with sunny bluebird days and a scheduled 2026–27 opening day of Friday, November 20.
Purgatory Resort in Durango, CO
Purgatory sits about 25 miles north of downtown Durango on U.S. 550 in the San Juan National Forest. Its 11 lifts serve 105 trails and an average of about 260 inches of dry Southwest powder each season. Local owner James Coleman restored the original Purgatory name in 2015 and has invested in new lifts, trails and snowmaking. This winter’s headline is the Colorado Couloir, a new fixed-grip triple chair climbing 1,625 vertical feet from the Gelande parking area, scheduled to debut in December, conditions permitting.
Beyond the lifts, Purgatory runs one of Colorado’s biggest snowcat operations plus scenic snowcat tours, a tubing hill, snowshoe tours, snowmobile adventures and Nordic skiing. In summer and fall, the resort turns into a mountain playground with aspens blazing gold along U.S. 550. Stay in Durango, ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or keep driving the Million Dollar Highway toward Silverton.
Insider tip: Purgatory uses dynamic pricing, so buying lift tickets online well ahead is the cheapest move—the resort has announced price increases starting November 10. First guests in line on opening day get the resort’s classic “POWdered pancakes.”
