Black Hawk was founded during the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859 when gold was discovered in nearby Gregory Gulch. The town quickly grew into a bustling mining community, earning the nickname “City of Mills” because of the ore-processing mills along Clear Creek.

By the early 20th century, the gold had dried up, and the town’s population declined. However, in 1991, gambling was legalized in Black Hawk (as well as Central City and Cripple Creek), revitalizing the area.
