Eldorado Canyon State Park
Eldorado Canyon State Park is a Colorado Parks and Wildlife park just south of Boulder where South Boulder Creek rushes between golden sandstone walls, and more than 500 technical routes make it a world-famous rock climbing destination.
Eldorado Canyon State Park in Eldorado Springs, CO
The park covers 1,392 acres in two areas: the developed Inner Canyon off Eldorado Springs Drive and the undeveloped Crescent Meadows area to the west. Its cliffs carry climbing routes on formations with names like the Wind Tower, the Bastille and Whale’s Tail, and South Boulder Creek, the canyon’s main water feature, carved them as the Front Range rose. History runs deep here, too. The Kneale brothers homesteaded the canyon in the 1880s, a failed narrow-gauge railroad grade became today’s Fowler Trail, and the Moffat Road rail line still runs along the canyon’s southern flank toward Winter Park. Technical climbers, nicknamed “marmots,” arrived in the 1950s, and the State of Colorado bought the canyon in 1978 after its owner threatened to sell it for a rock quarry, creating the state park.
Beyond climbing, the park offers 17.1 miles of trails, 11 picnic sites along the creek and more than 80 species of birds, with ringtails, bobcats and bighorn sheep among the wildlife you might spot. The Fowler Trail is an easy, mostly level walk with big views of the climbing walls, while the Eldorado Canyon Trail climbs toward the Walker Ranch Loop and Crescent Meadows (about 4.5 miles). The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and the visitor center is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. but closed on Thursdays. A CPW daily vehicle pass is required (about $10–$15), or $4 for an individual pass, and leashed dogs and horses are welcome. From May 1 through October 1, every vehicle entering the Inner Canyon on Saturdays, Sundays and summer holidays needs a timed entry reservation, and a weekend shuttle from Boulder runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
