Monarch Mountain

Monarch Mountain has been “keeping it real since 1939”: an independent ski area high on the Continental Divide west of Salida with about 350 inches of average annual snow, no crowds to speak of, and some of Colorado’s most fun steeps and hike-to terrain.

Monarch Mountain Ski Area near Salida, CO

Monarch sits off U.S. 50 near the top of Monarch Pass in the San Isabel and Gunnison National Forests, with a base elevation of 10,727 feet and a summit of 11,952 feet. Its 1,146 skiable acres are split across about 80 trails—a healthy share of them black and double-black—plus three terrain parks, the hike-to Mirkwood Basin, guided cat skiing on 1,635 acres and the new No Name Basin expansion that lets skiers ride both sides of the Continental Divide. Nine lifts move about 9,300 skiers an hour.

The ski area began as a Works Progress Administration project and was given to the City of Salida; a 500-foot rope tow powered by a Chevy engine once ran up Gunbarrel. That homegrown spirit endures with a family tubing park, lessons, childcare and a laid-back lodge. Base yourself in Salida or Buena Vista, and after a powder day soak at Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort.

Insider tip: In-season lifts run daily 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Uphill skiers need an uphill pass even before opening day—pick one up at the Monarch Outpost in downtown Salida (open daily 10 a.m.–6 p.m.). Check the conditions page and cams before you drive the pass.
