Steamboat Lake State Park

Steamboat Lake State Park is northern Colorado at its most postcard-perfect: a sparkling mountain lake at about 8,000 feet beneath the volcanic cone of Hahns Peak, ringed by aspen, sagebrush meadows and wildflowers, about 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs.

The park’s lake was created when a dam was built on Willow Creek in the late 1960s, and the 2,820-acre state park has been a North Routt County favorite ever since. The lake covers roughly 1,100 acres and offers Gold Medal fishing for big trout. In summer there is a full-service marina, a sandy swim beach, about 200 campsites and camper cabins, and miles of hiking and biking trails that connect into Routt National Forest. Fall brings golden aspen at the end of September, and sandhill cranes, ospreys and great blue herons are regular visitors.

Winter is a whole different show. The area routinely gets 300 inches of snow or more, and the park grooms trails for cross-country skiing, skate skiing, snowshoeing and fat-tire biking, plus a multiple-use trail that snowmobilers use to reach more than 140 miles of groomed forest trails. When the ice is safe, anglers drill holes across the lake. After a day outside, the hot pools at Strawberry Park Hot Springs and the slopes of Steamboat Resort are both within an easy drive.

Insider tip: For the classic photo, catch Hahns Peak glowing at sunset from the north shore or the meadows near the visitor center. Roads in North Routt can be snowy in winter, so check conditions and carry chains or good snow tires.
