Pearl Street Mall
Pearl Street Mall is Boulder’s four-block, brick-paved pedestrian promenade between 11th and 15th streets, where flower beds, historic storefronts, street performers and Flatirons views make downtown Boulder one of Colorado’s best places to stroll, shop and people-watch.
Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, CO
Pearl Street has been Boulder’s main street since the town’s earliest days. The Boulder City Town Company was founded on February 10, 1859, and the street is believed to have been named for the wife of one of the town’s 54 founders. Surveyors sighted a straight line from a stake at today’s Broadway and Pearl toward Valmont Butte, and the old dirt road later carried horse-drawn and electric streetcars before becoming, in 1917, the first paved street in Boulder. By the 1960s, suburban shopping centers were pulling business away, so the city decided to try something bold: the blocks between 11th and 15th streets were closed to traffic in June 1976, and the Pearl Street Mall was dedicated on August 6, 1977. The mall turns 50 in 2027, and its restored nineteenth-century buildings are protected by national and local historic designations.
Today the mall is the heart of downtown Boulder, with locally owned boutiques, outdoor gear shops, bookstores, galleries, coffee shops and restaurants with patios that spill onto the bricks. Jugglers, musicians, acrobats and other street performers draw crowds on warm evenings, flowers fill the planters for most of the year, and the historic Boulder County Courthouse and its lawn sit right on the mall, and Boulder Creek and the Flatirons are only a few minutes’ walk away. Parking is available in City of Boulder garages and at paid on-street kiosks (you’ll need your license plate number), and many visitors arrive by bus, bike or B-Cycle. The Downtown Boulder Partnership runs a visitor information center and publishes event calendars, dining guides and parking information.
