Buena Vista
Buena Vista lives up to its name—“beautiful view”—with the Collegiate Peaks stacked above town, the Arkansas River running through the valley, and a Main Street that still feels like a working mountain community rather than a resort strip.
Buena Vista, Colorado: Collegiate Peaks Adventure Town
Buena Vista sits in Chaffee County at about 7,965 feet on U.S. Highway 24. Fourteeners including Mount Princeton, Mount Yale and Mount Columbia dominate the skyline, and the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area makes the town one of Colorado’s classic rafting and kayaking hubs. Browns Canyon National Monument’s put-ins are a short drive south, and trailheads for hiking, mountain biking and fourteener climbs fan out in every direction.
Downtown clusters around East Main Street with cafes, gear shops, historic brick buildings and the Chamber Welcome Center in the wedge building. After a river day, many visitors continue south to Salida for dinner or north toward Leadville. Nearby Browns Canyon National Monument is the signature whitewater run when flows are in.
Insider tip: Catch sunrise or late light on the Collegiates from the east side of town, then walk Main Street before the midday river rush. Confirm Welcome Center seasonal hours before you count on maps and brochures indoors.
