Palisade

Palisade is Colorado’s fruit-and-wine country: peach orchards and vineyards spread across the Grand Valley floor, the striped cliffs of Mount Garfield and the Book Cliffs tower overhead, and the Colorado River slides right past a small-town Main Street.

Palisade, Colorado: Peaches, Wine & Book Cliffs

Established in 1904, the Town of Palisade sits on the eastern edge of Mesa County, just east of Grand Junction along Interstate 70. Its warm, sheltered microclimate grows the famous Palisade peaches along with cherries, apricots, apples and the grapes behind dozens of tasting rooms. That mix of farm stands, wineries, distilleries and breweries is why Palisade calls itself Colorado’s wine country, and why so many visitors explore it by bike, tour van or slow drive between orchards.

Beyond the glass, Palisade is a serious outdoor town. The Palisade Rim Trail climbs above town for big views over the Colorado River and vineyards, while Mount Garfield’s gray badlands and the Book Cliffs frame nearly every photo. In winter, the local “Alpine to Wine” idea pairs a morning in the snow on Grand Mesa with an afternoon of tastings back in the valley. Colorado National Monument and Two Rivers Winery near Grand Junction make easy add-ons.

Insider tip: Start downtown at the Palisade Chamber of Commerce at 305 Main Street for maps of farms, wineries and the bike-friendly backroads. Visit on a weekday to dodge weekend crowds, and come hungry—fruit stands sell peaches by the box in late summer, while fall brings apple picking, fresh cider and vineyard color.
