Trail Ridge Road
Trail Ridge Road is the drive that makes people pull over every mile: 48 miles of US Highway 34 across Rocky Mountain National Park, linking Estes Park and Grand Lake and climbing to 12,183 feet, the highest point on any continuous paved road in the United States.
Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, CO
The road opened to travel in 1932, and its builders knew what they had. While it was still under construction in 1931, National Park Service director Horace Albright predicted it would be a sensation, promising drivers “the whole sweep of the Rockies before you in all directions.” He was right. About 11 miles of the route run above treeline, around 11,500 feet, through alpine tundra where conditions resemble the Arctic. It is usually windy up top and 20 to 30 degrees colder than Estes Park or Grand Lake, so bring a jacket even in July. Trail Ridge Road is a designated All-American Road, one of the country’s most celebrated scenic byways.
Give yourself at least half a day. Classic stops include Many Parks Curve, the sweeping view at Rainbow Curve, Forest Canyon Overlook and the half-hour Tundra World Nature Trail at Rock Cut, where tiny wildflowers bloom in a summer season that lasts only weeks. The Alpine Visitor Center sits at Fall River Pass at 11,796 feet, and farther west the road crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass, 10,758 feet. Watch for elk, pikas, yellow-bellied marmots, white-tailed ptarmigan and bighorn sheep. Start with our guide to Rocky Mountain National Park, end the day on the boardwalk in Grand Lake, or compare it with Colorado’s other high roads, the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway and Independence Pass.
